Abstract
Background and Objectives : Ankyloglossia is an uncommon oral anomaly that can cause difficulty with speech articulation. There is a paucity of objective data on tongue mobility and speech after frenuloplasty. So we analysed the effect of frenuloplasty on speech and tongue mobility in ankyloglossia patients.

Material and Methods : Fifteen patients who had articulation problem and tongue tie were included in the study between September 2003 and July 2004. They were compared to a group of 18 normal children. The patients undertook frenuoplasty. Outcomes were assessed by measurements of tongue length, tongue mobility, speech evaluation, and parent questionnaires.

Results: Outcomes after frenuloplasty for ankyloglossia is favorable. Grossly, patients who underwent frenuloplasty gained tongue length, on average 10mm or more of tongue protrusion and tongue elevation. All calculated parameters for tongue length and mobility were statistically significant (p<0.05), compared with preoperative results. Parent perception of speech intelligibility showed improvement but objective speech parameters were not statistically significant (p>0.05).

Conclusion: Freunuloplasty is efficacious procedures for the treatment of symptomatic ankyloglossia. Surgical release of the frenulum is a safe and efficacious procedure, result-ing in improvement in tongue mobility, length and often speech articulation as well.
